How many plates is that?
Gym shorthand counts the biggest plates on one side of the bar: "two plates" means two 45 lb plates per side of a 45 lb bar, 225 lb total. Here's the full barbell math chart for both unit systems, and a racking calculator that does the math for any weight and any plate set.
Standard bar
Women's bar
The women's bar is lighter (35 lb / 15 kg) and, more importantly, thinner, a 25 mm grip instead of 28 mm. Plenty of lifters with smaller hands, men included, prefer it for exactly that: a surer grip, especially on pulls. Same plates, different bar, so the totals shift down by 10 lb / 5 kg.
| Plates per side | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 plate | 35 + 1 × 2 × 45 | 125 lb |
| 2 plates | 35 + 2 × 2 × 45 | 215 lb |
| 3 plates | 35 + 3 × 2 × 45 | 305 lb |
| 4 plates | 35 + 4 × 2 × 45 | 395 lb |
| 5 plates | 35 + 5 × 2 × 45 | 485 lb |
| 6 plates | 35 + 6 × 2 × 45 | 575 lb |
| 7 plates | 35 + 7 × 2 × 45 | 665 lb |
| Plates per side | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 plate | 15 + 1 × 2 × 20 | 55 kg |
| 2 plates | 15 + 2 × 2 × 20 | 95 kg |
| 3 plates | 15 + 3 × 2 × 20 | 135 kg |
| 4 plates | 15 + 4 × 2 × 20 | 175 kg |
| 5 plates | 15 + 5 × 2 × 20 | 215 kg |
| 6 plates | 15 + 6 × 2 × 20 | 255 kg |
| 7 plates | 15 + 7 × 2 × 20 | 295 kg |
The kg chart counts the blue 20 kg plates, which is how most kg gyms talk – that's why 60, 100 and 140 kg are the classic milestones. Powerlifters loading red 25 kg calibrated plates count differently: one red per side is 70 kg, two is 120 kg, three is 170 kg.
Real bars rarely load this cleanly, working weights land between milestones and home gyms run mismatched sets. The plate calculator solves any target weight against the plates you actually own, down to fractional 0.25 plates.
